Jim Casey reports back from a London Double – The Westminster Mile & Vitality 10k

So on a bank holiday Sunday I was off to race at the Vitality Westminster mile, which is part of the Vitality weekend that includes the London 10,000 on the Monday.  It was an early start to the day as I had to get the first train from Farnborough at 7.30 to waterloo then walk/jog over to green park where the bag drop off next to the vitality wellness festival village.

The course starts on the Mail and heads to Admiralty arch then turns off to horse guard’s road past the parade ground and the back for Downing Street on to Birdcage walk then on to the spur road and finish outside Buckingham palace. However, before thinking about getting to the start line I needed to warm up and to get my heart rate up ready for the off. Lucky I was in the second wave so there was plenty of room on the mail to warm up. Then over to the start line where we had a minutes silence for the Manchester bombing.

The first wave set off and we were called to the line the countdown 3 2 1 go up to speed thru 400 meters in a flash can see the 800 meters sign. Trying to keep strong but now having to work to keep my pace up 400 meters to go my legs are starting to protest, but try to up my pace 200 to go I try to up my pace again every seconds counts 100 metres one last push . I cross the line complete exhausted but extremely happy only 3 seconds slower than last year. An easy jog back to the baggage tent changed then off to see some if the family waves run past and cheer on are next generation of runners.

Then it was off to the south bank for some foot and to relax in the sun and not think about the 10k the next day.
