Burnham Beeches 10k – our 10k Expert Alurie Dutton reports…

The quest continues – Burnham Beeches 10k

Following on from the three Yateley 10kms and the three Woodland Fives over May, June July and August the challenge of one 10km per month continues, except it is now two (or even three)! This month the second 10km was at Burnham Beeches on Sunday (13th).

The start at 9.15 meant getting up early to get there in plenty of time especially as the website said the car park was a 25 minute walk from the start at Caldicott School. In fact it didn’t take quite that long to get to the school but arriving with lots of time to spare does no harm. The setting was excellent with a super family atmosphere and good facilities. There were also a couple of kit suppliers, a massage tent,   a stand where the local pub was selling coffee, bacon sandwiches and burgers and offering a Sunday lunch deal at the pub for those who wanted more, the Burnham Joggers information tent, and, best of all, .the use of the school swimming pool after the event. Can’t be bad.

The race actually started 15 minutes late because of traffic problems on the M40 making some of the runners late but we were kept informed, the weather was good and there were places to sit and chat with the other Sandhurst Joggers who were there ( some of whom were running the half marathon) so it wasn’t a problem.

The start was outside of the school and  followed a lovely route through Burnham Beeches along closed country lanes and  woodland paths in the shade of the famous Burnham beech trees. It was undulating with no nasty hills but you knew that whenever you went down you were going to have to go back up again eventually!  The route was well signposted with clear distance markers, had two water stations with water pouches which I find so much better than a bottle and the marshals were sited at every turn shouting encouragement. At the finish we received an attractive medal, a generous goody bag and a technical t shirt, which had your name on if you were one of the first thousand entrants.

All in all a great 10k which is on the list for next year.
